Tips for Taking Care of Your Water Heater

Tips for Taking Care of Your Water Heater
You need your Rock Island water heater to run efficiently. You need it to be in tiptop condition so that you always have hot water when you need it.
What can you do to ensure that your water heater lasts for a long time?
Keep the thermostat at 120 degrees. You decrease the risk of getting scalded by water that is too hot. Moreover, you are able to save on energy costs when you maintain the heater at the right temperature.
Keep a clearance of 2 feet around the water heater.
Get rid of debris and sediment from the tank by draining about a fourth of the tank’s content twice or thrice a year.
Start the procedure by turning off the cold water supply. Attach the drain valve to a garden hose. Allow the water to flow into a bucket. Stop when you see that the water has turned clear.
If the water stays cloudy, unfasten the water supply valve long enough to stir up the sediments on the tank. Continue draining the tank.
Cleaning the tank regularly is also an effective way of making the unit run more quietly.
Once a year, test the relief valve for temperature pressure. Discharge it twice or thrice. Check the valve for small leaks.
Once every three years, check the sacrificial anode rode of your Rock Island hot water heater. Loosen the head screw, take it out, and carefully inspect the rod.
Is the core steel wire exposed by more than 5 inches?
Is the rod less than half an inch thick?
Is the rod covered in calcium?
Replace the rod if you answer “yes” to any of these questions.
If you have an old water heater, you can increase its efficiency by using a fiberglass jacket to insulate it. (The newer models in the market already come with insulation). It is also best to insulate both the cold and hot water tubes.

If you have a gas water heater, make sure to leave the thermostat on “vacation” setting when you go out of town.
